Bloomington is a pleasant city in McLean County, in the state of Illinois, in the United States of America and the county seat of the local county too. It is adjacent to the city of Normal, and it is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. The city of Bloomington has been growing too as the economy has been progressing ever upwards from the small town, agricultural city that it once was and into the more diversified, advanced, affluent city that it is today.
According to the 2010 census as put together by the United States Census Bureau, it was shown that the city had a population of 76,610 all in all, making it the 12th most populated city in Illinois by far, and the fifth-most populous city in the state outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Combined with Normal, the twin cities have a population of roughly 130,000 all in all, making them a powerhouse combination and a driving force for the economic success of that part of the state.
As for Bloomington’s history, during the first two decades of the 20th century, Bloomington continued to grow and in a big way too. For decades the city had been just a small community really, but starting off in the 1900s it really began to pick up. Agriculture and livestock, the construction of highways and railroads, and the growth of the insurance business, (mainly State Farm Insurance but with some others too), all influenced the growth of Bloomington and its downtown area and the expansion of this community into a legitimate city. The downtown area became a regional shopping center attracting trade from adjoining counties and even from other states at times. This trend of expansion in areas other than agriculture has actually continued to the present day, where expansion has included many restaurants and other businesses too.
Bloomington is still to this day located in one of the most productive by far agricultural areas in the entire nation, but as mentioned above the economy is diverse and well-balanced all together. In addition to the major manufacturers and industries that play a part here, there are two universities, two hospitals, a convention center, one indoor mall, one outdoor mall, and many banks and Savings & Loan Associations located across the Bloomington. The City of Bloomington is and has been for some time one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in Illinois with an estimated 20.25% increase in population between 1986 and 1995, and even more increases since then. New construction continues to enhance residential, industrial and commercial growth in the area as well, as has been noted by the ever present expansion of the city.
Sadly, the entire state of Illinois is currently going through what may be the worst drug and alcohol abuse problem the city has ever faced. This is a serious issue in this city and it has been for some time now, and the problem has gotten so bad in Chicago that it has spread out into outlying towns and areas, including towns like Bloomington. Bloomington has never really suffered with any type of addiction problem before, but it is definitely suffering now and in a big way too. The issue here is perhaps worse than it has ever been before, and unless something is done quickly to try and address and remedy it, it is sure to only get much, much worse long before it gets any better.
Bloomington isn’t the only one that is suffering either. Many other cities have suffered from a gradual spread of opiates from the Chicago area all across Illinois. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (NSDUH), put together some statistics on opiate abuse in the nation so that it is really clear just how bad this issue is in Bloomington:
There is no doubt about it, now more so than ever Bloomington needs to expand on their substance abuse recovery programs and really delve fully into inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations. These are the only programs that can actually remove drug and alcohol addicts from an area, rehabilitate them fully and completely, and then send them back as totally clean and sober individuals. This is the most important thing for the drug and alcohol addicts of Bloomington to do. Now more than ever it is necessary for those addicted and afflicted in Bloomington to seek out rehab and recovery programs and organizations to effectively handle their addiction problems.
Preventative measures will go a far way in Bloomington, but they won’t go all of the ways by any means at all. As long as a city still has drug or alcohol addicts in it, those addicts will find a way to bring drugs and alcohol into the community. They are very resourceful individuals in that category. With the proper rehabilitation of which there are several options to look into, addicts in Bloomington can finally handle the drug problem that they are faced with and they can handle it once and for all too.
